Backstreet Boys show their strength
News icon Say what you will about their style or substance, but there is no denying that the Backstreet Boys are the biggest-selling music act of any kind to ever perform in Prince George, and it showed.
In their 15-year history, BSB's record sales are pegged at somewhere around the 200 million mark worldwide, ranking them about 30th all-time behind only the most prestigious names like Madonna, The Beatles and Elvis. Two of their albums (Millennium and Backstreet Boys) are ranked in the Top 40 most popular discs ever made.
Nobody reaches those heights without some validity. It is easy to moan and grind against the bubble gum veneer of music videos and super simple lyrics and melodies when the distance of TV and radio are in play, but when they stand before you and throw it down on your stage in your house, it changes things. You get to see the sweat involved, you get to take in the theatrics, you get to appreciate the very intricate choreography. And you get to hear the unprecedented power of fans who screamed and roared and sang their appreciation like no other show I've ever seen in P.G. It's amazing how deep 2,000 female voices can pierce, on top of the 1,000-or-so guys who were also at CN Centre Sunday night.

Backstreet looks to change its sound, Carter says
News icon Nick Carter is the most visible face of the Backstreet Boys, the vocal group that sold more than 75 million albums in its chart-topping '90s heyday.

Carter, Brian Littrell, Howie Dorough and AJ McLean reunited a second time in 2007 to release their fifth studio album, Unbreakable. The group, which no longer includes Kevin Richardson, has toured extensively since and stops Friday in Phoenix.

Carter, 28, checked in from a tour stop in Canada.

Question: Where's home base for you these days?

Answer: I've made three spots my home base. I moved to Nashville and set up my studio there for writing, and I have a cool house there. I also have a place in LA and still have a place in Florida (where his parents live).

Q: Are you an eligible bachelor?

A: Of course, of course.

Q: Is it still hard to go out and grab a bite or a drink without being bothered?

A: People still come up to me and say things, but it's such a part of my life it's not like I pay attention to it too much.

Nick's New Myspace Blog!
News icon Stuck in a bunk

I tend to write in the weirdest places huh. I'm in a bunk on our bus. Were heading to Grand Prairie Canada. I'm a little beat, because we've been on tour for almost a year now. It's getting a little chilly outside and we are all trying to stay away from the cold bug. lol It's been amazing to see how many people still believe in what we do. There's been so much support its awesome. It feels like we've been doing our own crazy campaign like Obama for almost a year, going around reminding people that we still are here.( Speaking of him.) seeing him win makes me feel that there is still good left in this world. I'm very happy. It also makes me think that with hard work, dedication and belief, anything can happen. And the same goes for us, as a group and as an individual . Yes we can change. And that is exactly what we are setting course to do. We are going to change alot, The way our past records have sounded. The way were perceived . And just our message overall . I thank all of you in your strength too. You are some tough cookies. Its not that COOL to be a BSB or Nick Carter fan at times. But i promise you this. Were working to CHANGE all that. You know? With mistakes comes lessons. With lessons comes learning. And with learning comes teaching. I'd rather be the solution then the problem. I'd rather be a teacher of good than the teacher of bad. It's been a long tough road for us at times, ( Even AMERICA) But i believe what defines a true champion is endurance. When you fall , pick yourself off the ground and at the least , FINISH THE RACE. You've heard this " Its not how you start , it's how you finish". That's what we believe so should you. I'm very excited about everything we are about to do. Thank you for your love and let the revolution begin again. To all our BSB soldiers. Spread the word. Peace

PS. AJ says hi. lol

REVIEW: An eardrum blowout
News icon Must... resist... the urge.

Can't resist. Too weak. Here we go. Backstreet's ba...

All right.

Now that that's over -- hey! Guess what? Multi-platinum (and famously manufactured) pop outfit The Backstreet Boys came back to the MTS Centre last night for, like, the first time since 2005.

This time, they're down a Boy ("quiet one" Kevin Richardson bowed out in 2006) and confronting the harsh truth that nobody cares about their new music. Their latest, 2007's Unbreakable, slid off the charts after two weeks.

But nostalgia is a thriving industry. Women of the Backstreet era (now in their mid-20s) still gladly open their wallets to see the Boys dance and croon their chest-thumpingly earnest ballads live.

And they still open their mouths to scream, too.

The eardrum blowout started at 8:30 p.m., when the lights rose on a centre-stage boxing ring. One by one, the Boys -- Brian Littrell, Nick Carter, Howie Dorough and A.J. McLean -- emerged Rocky-style in white satin dressing gowns and pugilist gloves.

That imagery was none too subtle -- this is a boy band that takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin' -- but opener Larger Than Life was still a knockout, with jump-and-jab choreography to match the theme.

Then the gloves came off, and the next outfit in a series came on. Motorcycle jackets and tattered Black Sabbath tees for Everyone, business casual for Incomplete.

They're back, & all right
News icon There's an oft-repeated bit of Scripture -- usually reserved for commencement addresses and weddings -- that speaks of putting away childish things once you become a man.

And while we certainly don't want to tell the Backstreet Boys how to do their jobs, the Florida foursome -- who brought their Unbreakable tour to MTS Centre last night -- might want to consider giving the passage a look-see.

Obviously, it's been some time since any of the Boys were really boys: Youngest member Nick Carter turns 29 in January, while eldest Howie Dorough just turned 35.

But the unfortunate name isn't the only holdover from their mid-'90s glory days, when slick dance moves and Swedish-penned pop tunes (oh, and the financial backing of America's biggest boy-band mogul) were all it took to reach the top of the charts.

They also find themselves locked in the same man-boy limbo where their music is concerned -- trying to make the leap into adult-contemporary territory, but still beholden to the former teeny-boppers who made them famous in the first place.

Boys no longer, but show proves Backstreet's back
News icon Who knew so many Saskatoon women spoke scream fluently? At Thursday's Backstreet Boys concert tongues were wagging and shrieking as the group's four members sang, danced and entertained the hell out of a predominantly female audience.

The last time the pop group came to Saskatoon they had yet to make it huge in the U.S., Nick Carter still hadn't dated Paris Hilton and their fans were predominantly ages nine through 17. But 10 years later, if their concert at Credit Union Centre proved anything, the appetite for their catchy hits and synchronized dance moves hasn't waned.

The fans are older but still overwhelmingly enthusiastic, wearing concerts T-shirts and holding up signs. One read: "I'm old enough now."

We still love: Backstreet's back
News icon Backstreet Boys
Backstreet's Back
Released Aug. 12, 1997

The Jonas Brothers may have revived the pop boy band, but the Backstreet Boys will forever be remembered in their heyday.

Notorious mainstream music magnate Lou Pearlman may be a fraud, but at least he did something right when he gave the world a glorious fivesome of Chippendale-like (but unofficially Christian) crooners called the Backstreet Boys.

Maybe you have appreciated the group's second self-titled album, which really seemed like a debut record to Americans, since the first one wasn't released in the U.S.

But all that is irrelevant now.

Eleven years ago, the group took junior highs by storm as schoolboys lip-synched to slow dance songs from the album in talent shows everywhere. Girls plastered posters of Brian, Kevin, Nick, A.J., and Howie wherever they could fit.

Despite competition with ultra boy band 'N SYNC, the sartorially coordinated Backstreet Boys' lighthearted dance music came first. And who could resist the tender rhetoric in songs like "Quit Playin' Games (With My Heart)" and "As Long As You Love Me?"

Now in their thirties, the boys (minus Kevin) are still recording love songs and touring for diehard fans, who have aged right along with them. [Source]
